Student car insurance can be used for the following purposes:
University: If you are studying a few hours away, you can get covered for the journeys back and forth from home, in between and during term times.
Trips: For weekends away, school trips and even festivals with your friends, you can get your vehicle covered for travelling in the UK and extended to Europe too.
Campus: As insurance is a legal requirement to drive on UK roads, you will need insurance simply to drive around from class to class and other places like the town centre, gym and restaurants.
Work placement: Even if you are doing a work placement as a University student for a term or year, you can still take advantage of special rates offered to students.
The most basic level of cover you need is third party insurance which only covers you for the accidents that happen to third parties such as pedestrians, other drivers and property. So if you are involved in an accident, your insurance claim will pay for any compensation or repairs to the victim, but it will not pay anything towards your own vehicle or personal injury.
The next level of cover includes third party and also fire, flood and theft. So in the event of a fire, flooding or your car is stolen, your insurance will contribute towards any repairs and replacing your vehicle with a new one.
The highest cover is a fully comprehensive policy which includes everything like third party, fire, flood, theft and also any damages to your own vehicle. All policies with Call Wiser include free legal cover to pay for any legal fees if you have to go to court over a claim. We also include handbag and wallet cover, mobile phone and free breakdown too with every policy.
Temporary cover is available for students too which is perfect if you do not want to commit to insurance for an entire year. It is ideal if you only need cover for a few days or weeks to go on holiday or travel between home and University.
In reality, the cost of insuring a young person is very high and can be as much as £3,000 per year. The reason that young drivers tend to pay more for insurance is because they have less experience on the road and are therefore deemed more likely to have an accident. However, as well as offering the most competitive rates possible, we can recommend some other things you can do to save money on your premium.
For instance, not all young drivers are inexperienced and considered ‘unsafe.’ Taking a Pass Plus Course will give you an extra driving qualification that is recognized by our insurers and give you a discount of around 20%. Similarly, if you a safe driver, you can add a telematics box to your vehicle to monitor your speed, braking and turning and if this determines that you are a good driver, your premium will be lower.
Another tip is increasing the voluntary excess on your policy. This means you will only pay more towards a claim if you are involved in an accident. But provided that you do not claim, your insurer will thank you for your commitment and reduce your fees accordingly.
As a student, you are used to getting discounts for things like transport, cinema and clothes and your car insurance is no different. We work with various insurers that offer deals exclusively for students. You may need to show proof that you are a student or provide an NUS card.
Similarly, we can arrange a special premium for university student car insurance for those doing an undergraduate degree, Masters or PhD. If you have been driving for several years, this will likely result in a better premium as you are considered more experienced and a lower risk of making a claim. Specifically, those students over 25 tend to have access to better rates and can take advantage of a no claims bonus if they have been driving claim-free for a few years.
