Can I get temporary car insurance at 18?

27 March 2019

As an 18-year-old, there are various reasons why you may wish to take out temporary car insurance. You may intend to borrow someone’s car to drive to a festival or event, or to travel back and forth from university. Or perhaps you’ve simply passed your test recently and are eager to start driving, but are thinking of purchasing a short-term policy instead of committing to something longer – maybe because you’ll shortly be replacing your current car?

We could go on listing reasons, but the basic answer to the question “can I get temporary car insurance at 18?” is “yes... maybe”. Allow us to explain further below.

It can be quick and convenient, but watch the cost

While temporary car insurance for 18-year-olds certainly exists, many insurers won’t cover you until you have held a valid driving licence for at least 12 months. Other restrictions may apply, depending on such factors as the vehicle that you are looking to insure and any previous claims you may have. It also naturally helps to not have penalty points on your licence or pending prosecutions.

A more obvious potential barrier to you obtaining short-term car insurance at 18, though, is the cost. As drivers of your age are not only inexperienced compared to those who have spent decades behind the wheel, but also statistically more likely to be involved in accidents and make insurance claims, you can expect to be charged potentially a lot more than other drivers.

To give an idea of just how important it is to shop around when you are seeking a temporary car insurance policy as an 18-year-old, quotes in excess of £100 a day are not uncommon.

The good news is that here at Call Wiser, we have an especially good reputation as a car insurance broker for young drivers aged between 17 and 25, not least because we can also bring you such perks as free breakdown cover, claim assistance, mobile phone, gadget and handbag cover.

What are the best ways to reduce the price you pay?

As well as comparing as many temporary car insurance quotes as you can to ensure you’re getting the best possible deal, you could consider increasing the excess on your policy – although again, there can be constraints on affordability here. Thanks to the factors mentioned above, insurers might quote you an excess as high as £1,000 if you are 18.

As we would suggest to anyone seeking car insurance, you can also expect to pay less if your car has a smaller engine – think such models as the Nissan Micra, Kia Rio, Volkswagen Polo, Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta, which all tend to be in the lowest insurance groups.

Remember, too, that temporary car insurance is called temporary car insurance for a reason – it really is only designed to be used for a short period, typically between one and 28 days. As the price of short-term cover is calculated on a per-day basis, the longer the policy is, the more you will pay.

If, then, you intend to spend more than a few weeks using the car, it might be cheaper to purchase an annual policy and cancel it early, even when the likely cancellation fee of between £30 and £55 is taken into account. In any case, while you do have the option of extending a temporary car insurance policy beyond a 28-day term, you can’t just continually renew it as an alternative to a year-long policy – indeed, it is now against the law to do so.

Other key things to know when searching for such cover

It’s important to bear in mind that you do have a lot of options if you wish to get insured as an 18-year-old driver. Among the various short-term policies, one-day cover may be available to help you to reduce the cost further. Alternatively, you could forgo the temporary car insurance route altogether by seeking to have yourself added as a named driver on someone else’s existing policy, or obtaining a multi-car insurance policy.

When looking for a short-term policy, you should also follow what we would hope to be the usual common-sense approaches that would apply for seeking a standard one. Not only, for example, do you need to be at least 18 years of age to obtain temporary car insurance through Call Wiser, but you must also be a UK resident, have held a valid UK driver’s licence for at least six months, and have permission to use the vehicle you are interested in insuring.

Any previous penalties or convictions for such things as drink driving or driving without insurance will also be borne in mind by insurers when putting together a quote for temporary car cover.
