The news broke yesterday that thousands of UK motorists could be at risk of being scammed when they buy their car insurance as fraudsters embark on a campaign which has been dubbed 'ghost broking'. This new movement means that people could be buying worthless car insurance online by fake companies which have been set up to reap the revenue for annual car insurance policies.
In response the City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department has launched a campaign to raise awareness of fraudsters selling fake car insurance and warn motorists to 'Steer Clear of Fraud'.
Commenting on this movement, Craig Anderson Senior Assistant Director at Call Wiser said: "Security and fraud prevention is among the main concerns to insurers and brokers. In the past three years, over 850 reports of ghost broking have been reported to ActionFraud, with reported losses from individuals and organisations totalling £631,000.
At Call Wiser, we work hard to protect our customers from fraud and we encourage them to ask questions before they buy. In fact, our motto is 'it's better to talk', so pick up the phone and call us for a quote, that way you can be reassured you are getting a legitimate service which will cover all your needs.”
To help protect our customers from ghost broking, we have put together some top tips to ensure that you are protected from fraud when applying for car insurance in 2018.
Before you commit to buying your car insurance, make sure you check the legitimacy of the vendor you are looking to purchase from. Check at least two or three third party sources for information on the company, read reviews from reputable sites and if still unsure, phone the company and ask for information directly.
Using a search engine like Google or Bing can give you all sorts of information on a company, including what people are saying on forums and social media. So, if there are negative reviews and people warning against using the service then steer clear. Equally, this may bring back results where the company is shown in a good light, which will encourage you that they are a legitimate firm.
